Holland isn't the world champion of flowers by accident – their gardens look incredibly lush and perfectly designed.
The good news? You can achieve a similar effect in your own backyard for Spring 2026. Here is a simple plan that anyone can follow, even if you are a complete beginner.
Step 1 – Choose the Right Bulbs (Planting: Sept–Nov)
For a maximum "wow" factor, buy a combination of tall and low-growing varieties:
Medium-height Tulips (40–50 cm): Queen of Night, Apeldoorn, Pink Impression.
Daffodils for fragrance and early blooms: Thalia, Jetfire, Tête-à-Tête.
Hyacinths for intense scent: Woodstock or Blue Jacket.
Crocuses and Muscari: To create a "carpet of color" at the very start of spring.
Step 2 – Try "Layered Planting" (The Lasagna Method)
In a large pot or a hole in the ground, stack your bulbs in three levels:
Bottom Layer: Tulips (deepest, 15–18 cm).
Middle Layer: Daffodils and Hyacinths (10–12 cm).
Top Layer: Crocuses, Muscari, or Chionodoxa (5–8 cm).
This technique ensures continuous blooming from February all the way to May!

Step 3 – Breathtaking Color Combinations
Classic Dutch Elegance: White + Dark Red + Purple.
Cheerful & Vibrant: Yellow Daffodils + Pink Tulips + Blue Muscari.
Dramatic Contrast: Black Tulips + White Daffodils + Burgundy Hyacinths.
Step 4 – Post-Bloom Care: Don't Throw Away the Bulbs!
Once the flowers fade, let the leaves turn yellow naturally (this feeds the bulb for next year). After that, dig them up, let them dry in a well-ventilated spot, and store them in a dark, dry place until the next planting season. Many varieties will return for 4–7 years.
