Ants on lawns usually create unsightly soil mounds, damage root systems, and loosen the turf, causing dry, brown patches. The most common culprit is the European Fire Ant or the Field Ant.

Ants love sandy, dry soil under short grass where they can build intricate underground tunnels and warm their eggs near the surface.

• Apply Broadcast Ant Granules: Granules are the most effective method for large outdoor areas. You spread them across the lawn using a broadcast spreader and water them in. The ants carry the slow-acting toxic bait back down to the queen.

• Targeted Mound Drenches: If you only have a few raised ant mounds, pour a liquid insecticidal drench directly into the nest entrance.

• Mow Higher & Water Deeply: Ants prefer short, dry turf. Maintaining grass height above 3 inches shades the soil, keeping it cooler and less hospitable for ant colonies.

When ants overrun flower beds, they usually bring a silent accomplice: Aphids. Ants "farm" aphids for their honeydew (a sweet liquid secreted by sap-sucking insects). In return, ants protect aphids from natural predators like ladybugs.

• Eliminate the Aphids First: Spray your flowers with neem oil or insecticidal soap to remove the honeydew source. Once the food is gone, ants will naturally migrate elsewhere.

• Diatomaceous Earth (DE): Sprinkle Food-Grade Diatomaceous Earth around the base of your plants. DE is an all-natural, non-toxic powder made from fossilized algae. It cuts through the ant’s waxy exoskeleton, causing them to dehydrate and die within 48 hours.

• Important Note: Apply DE when the soil and leaves are completely dry. Reapply after heavy rain.

Ants in potted plants are particularly dangerous because their tunneling dries out the root system, causing potted flowers and outdoor houseplants to suddenly wilt and die despite regular watering.

• The Submersion Method: Submerge the entire pot in a bucket of lukewarm water mixed with 2 tablespoons of mild liquid dish soap or insecticidal soap for 15–20 minutes. This floods the subterranean tunnels, forcing the ants and queen to float to the top and drown.

• Repotting: If the colony is massive, slip the plant out of its container, shake off the infested soil into a trash bag, rinse the roots with fresh water, and repot in fresh, well-draining potting mix.

• Apply Sticky Barriers: Wrap the outside rim of the pot or container stand with double-sided horticultural tape or tree tanglefoot to prevent ants from climbing back up.

Patios made of pavers, tiles, or concrete slabs often suffer from ant nests underneath. Ants push up fine sand through the gaps, destabilizing the pavers.

• Liquid Ant Bait Stations: Outdoor bait stations are weatherproof and contain a liquid sugar solution laced with Borax. Worker ants feed on it, take it back under the pavers, and feed the colony.

• Boiling Water & Vinegar Flush: For immediate organic control under patio cracks, pour a mixture of boiling water and white vinegar directly into the gaps.

• Polymeric Sand: After clearing the ants, sweep polymeric sand into the paver joints and wet it. It hardens like concrete, preventing future nesting.

Indoor ants (such as Argentine Ants, Odorous House Ants, or Pharaoh Ants) enter homes searching for two things: moisture and sweet/greasy food scraps.

NEVER use contact aerosol sprays on indoor worker ants! Contact sprays only kill 1% of the visible ants. Worse, repellents cause the colony to panic and perform a process called "budding"—where the queen splits the colony into multiple smaller sub-colonies throughout your walls.

• Use Gel Baits: Place small drops of liquid ant bait along indoor ant trails, behind appliances, and near entry points (window sills, baseboards).

• Be Patient (The 3-Day Rule): For the first 24–48 hours, you will see MORE ants around the bait. Do not kill them! Let them feed freely and carry the bait back inside your walls. Within 3 to 5 days, the entire indoor colony will collapse.

• Seal Entry Points: Use silicone caulk to seal cracks around window frames, electrical outlets, and baseboards.
